Cigarette Advertising – A Brief History

In June of 2009, Time Magazine published an article that outlined the history of cigarette advertising in the U.S starting in 1979 when the Lorillard Tobacco Company promoted their snuff in a local New York newspaper.  The article includes shocking several images of what have been called “classing cigarette ads.”  These cigarette ads featured endorsements from dentists, doctors, babies (yes, babies endorsed cigarettes) and Yankees slugger Mickey Mantle.

In cardio health this week, we’ll be splitting into groups and taking on the roles of cigarette companies.  Student groups will be brainstorming ways to sell more cigarettes and creating “classic” ads of their own.
