Classroom to 5k in 5 Weeks

Classroom to 5k in 5 Weeks

We start our 5 week training program for a 5k tomorrow in my Cardio/Health classes.  I’m excited about this for 2 main reasons.  First, I’m a runner.  I have done several marathons, half-marathons, and 10ks over the past few years.  Because of this, I’ve got stories to share and tips to offer.  I have a passion for running that I want to convey to my students.  I hope that this passion is contagious.  I think it might be.  Second, I think that running is the most lasting form of fitness that we teach in the high school physical education curriculum.  Think about how many adults you know who play flag football, volleyball, or soccer regularly.  I bet you can count these people on your fingers.  Now think about how many adults you know who run regularly.

I know that’s about as unscientific as a survey can get but I’m still going to go with my hunch.  You don’t need a group to do it.  You don’t need a field or any special equipment.  You can do it just about anywhere in the world at anytime of day.  Yes, running is a more sustainable form of fitness than any team sport and I’m going to do everything I can to help my students love it and know how to do it well.
