Bracken and Carson were practicing soccer, Cormick was climbing around on the playground, and Anders was contemplating life, limitations and priorities under the oak trees. I stood and watched our 18 month old gathering acorns for about 30 minutes. His process was simple at first. He crouched down and used both of his little handsContinue reading “I can only hold 5 acorns”

The Greatest Week Video Contest
It’s Homecoming week at Del Oro, and it’s huge. Every day has a different dress up theme (doctors vs. patients, blast from the past, alarm didn’t go off, etc.) and students and teachers go all out with their costumes. Every night this week students are at school until about 10pm building floats for the paradeContinue reading “The Greatest Week Video Contest”
Cardboard Carnival
My kids’ preschool it at it again. Last year’s event was a huge success so they are doing another Cardboard Carnival in downtown Loomis. Kids/Families are making carnival style games out of cardboard and other things they find around the house. My kids and my niece got pretty into it. Take a look.
Those creepy little pictures
I got my school pictures a few weeks ago. I’m never sure what to do with these. You’ve got the massive 8×10 that your grandma used to hang on her wall – this was cute when I was 10 but probably a little weird now that I’m 37. You’ve got the two 5x7s that mayContinue reading “Those creepy little pictures”
A story about a fridge
This past Sunday I had the opportunity to share a story about a refrigerator magnet conversation I recently had with my kids. The room was beautifully chaotic as families and friends (some as young as 2 weeks and others as young as 80+ years) enjoyed breakfast together. Check out the story and the pics ofContinue reading “A story about a fridge”
Live from the room next door
Monday was parent night at Del Oro High School. In previous years, I’ve had my broadcasting students record a news show the week before that I can show to their parents. If the show doesn’t come out great, if the transitions are that smooth, if the audio needs some work, I can fix all ofContinue reading “Live from the room next door”
We’ve got HOMEWORK!!!
My oldest two kids came into my classroom yesterday after school with giant smiles. “Daddy, we’ve got HOMEWORK!!!” They were ecstatic. They couldn’t wait to sit down and get started on it. They set themselves up at a small desk in the back of the room, carefully got out their homework and went right toContinue reading “We’ve got HOMEWORK!!!”
Give us another quiz!!
I found this new assessment tool that left my students asking for more. It turned a quiz into a game with live results, a leader-board, trash talking and cheering for more. It’s called kahoot and if you’re a teacher whose students have access to computers, tablets or smartphones, you’ve got to check it out.
Summer and Time
My summer break will end in less than 2 hours. It’s been several weeks since school let out but it somehow feels like less than that and more than that at the same time. One of the books that I read this summer explored the bizarre nature of time – how sometimes it can seemContinue reading “Summer and Time”
What should we do today?
At the beginning of the summer, everyone in our family shared one thing that we were hoping to do this summer. The kids shouted out things like camping trips, bike rides, and ice cream parties. I thought for a little while before realizing that what I really wanted was to have a few mornings whenContinue reading “What should we do today?”
